Car Scams

There are currently many car buying and selling scams prevalent on the internet. They are usually easy to spot if you know what to look for. Please read the information below to protect yourself from fraud.

If you have been a victim of a scam, please report it to the FBI: http://www.ic3.gov/

Car Buying Scams

Most car buying scams involve a foreign buyer who offers to pay more then the value of the vehicle with instructions to wire the extra money back to them, to a shipping company, or to a third party they 'owe money to'. Their cashier check will appear to clear and the bank will release the funds. Many days or even weeks later, after the excess money has already been wired to the fraudulent buyer, the check will be discovered to be a fraud. This leaves the seller paying the full amount back to their bank. These scams often involve buyers claiming to be from Africa, the UK, or Indonesia.

Car Selling Scams
Find a 1955 Mercedes Benz 300SL Gullwing for an unbelievable price? Don't believe it. Many rare and exotic cars are listed for sale at seemingly great prices, but these deals are almost always too good to be true. The seller is often from another country, commonly Indonesia. They will request a 'small down- payment' on the vehicle and may even provide you with official looking shipping documents. The car will never materialize and your money will be gone.

Protecting Yourself
If something sounds too good to be true, it almost always is. Be very suspicious of ads with unusually low prices and incorrect phone numbers. Google is a great way to sniff out a scammer. Just do a search for their e-mail address and see what comes up. Do they have ads on other sites? Do the details match (name, location, phone number, price, etc...)?

What steps are we taking?
All e-mail sent from this site now includes the senders IP address in the message and in the e-mail header.
